WhatsApp is used by over a billion people worldwide and about 12 million users in Pakistan alone.

Often used as an alternative to SMS, WhatsApp is free to download and offers simple messaging and calling. And not just that, it also supports sharing of media and other data across different file formats.

However, it can sometimes become a nuisance when it auto-saves all the media files and clutters your photo gallery in the process.

But guess what! You CAN stop WhatsApp from automatically downloading photos, videos, etc., to your Android phone. Here’s how.

  1. Open WhatsApp (the main window, that is).
  2. Tap the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the window.

3. Tap Settings.

4. Tap Data Usage.

5. Below Media auto-download, three options will appear: “When using mobile data”, “When connected on Wi-Fi” and “When roaming”.

6. Tap all three of them and turn off auto-downloads by deselecting the Image, Audio and Video file types. Tap OK to save this setting.

There you are! From now onwards, any media file attached to a WhatsApp message will not be saved automatically on your phone.
